ZANTEL, a mobile phone company, has donated security equipment worth 9m/- to 18 Sungusungu groups in Dar es Salaam to support crime prevention.
The equipment donated included 90 bicycles, 180 rain coats, 180 batons, 180 whistles and 180 torches.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Zantel Chief Executive Officer Noel Harrity said the equipment would benefit all groups in the three of the city`s municipalities, which are Ilala, Temeke and Kinondoni.
Harrity said that his company is devoted to work hand in hand with authorities and other stakeholders in addressing urban crime.
He said the fight against crime should not be left to the government alone; the private sector also had a role to play.
`Crime is a serious problem to sustainable and economic development, thus the safer city programme initiated by the Dar es Salaam City Council will help to build capacities at city level to adequately address urban insecurity and contribute to the establishment of a culture of prevention,` he said.
For his part, City Mayor Adam Kimbisa said the donation had come at the right time when the city needed modern security equipment.
He said they would work hard and cooperate more closely with the private sector to provide better urban services to most dwellers in the city.
`Our cities are short of financial resources, so it is imperative to seek assistance and exploit opportunities provided by the private sector,`he said.
Safer Cities Programme supported and acknowledged the responsibility of local communities in crime prevention, he concluded.
