By Khalfan Said, Kilwa Pande

A famous religious leader, Sheikh Nurdin Hussein Al-Hassan Shadhily, was laid to rest at his home village of Kilwa Pande in Lindi Region at around 2.00pm yesterday.

The funeral was also attended by President Jakaya Kikwete and First Lady Salma Kikwete.

Other dignitaries included veteran politician Rashidi Mfaume Kawawa, Chief Sheikh Mufti Issa bin Simba and sheikhs from the Comoros, Kenya and Uganda.

President Kikwete, who cut short his tour of lake zone to attend the burial, flew back shortly thereafter.

Speaking during the funeral, the President said: `The deceased is a person to be remembered by myself and my family because we depended on him on many issues.

His death is a real blow to us. We shall remember him for his love and compassion, and because he loved people of other religions.`

For his part, IPP Executive Chairman Reginald Mengi said that he would remember the deceased sheikh for three important things he had taught him.

`He said that the wealth of a person did not lie in property but in people. The sheikh also told me that if you are financially capable, you should not indulge just in self-satisfaction but in sharing with others. He also stressed the need for cooperation, a merciful heart and loving other people,` said Mengi.
