Chama Cha Mapinduzi election results trickling in from different regions have continued to register surprises.

Reports from Musoma say Charles Makongoro Nyerere, once Arusha Urban legislator on the opposition NCCR-Mageuzi ticket, has won the Mara regional chairmanship. He is a son of Founding President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Trailing Makongoro were Dr Charles Chinuno Magoti and Nashon Otieno with 172 and 117 votes, respectively, to the victor`s 468.

In Kigoma, former MP Azim Premji won the regional CCM chairmanship while Energy and Minerals minister Nazir Karamagi won the NEC seat.

As for the party`s representation to the National Executive Committee (NEC), Musoma Urban MP Vedastus Mathayo Manyinyi was declared winner after scooping 475 votes to Otieno Igogo`s 265 and Dereck Murusuli`s 15.

From Singida, Elisante John reports that Joram Allute has been elected regional chairman after collecting 409 votes. He floored Asha Mwinjori, who ended up with 190.

Legislator Mohamed Dewji won the regional representation to NEC after registering 494 votes to fellow MP Mgana Msindai`s 94 and Grace Puja’s six.

Meanwhile, the Zanzibar Deputy Chief Minister Ali Juma Shamuhuna lost the just-concluded election of four CCM members to represent North Unguja Region in the NEC, Mwinyi Sadallah reports.

The election was officiated at by Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume and saw Shamuhuna defeated alongside North Unguja Regional Commissioner Pembe Juma Khamis in a closely contested race.

The election supervisor, Zanzibar Education and Culture minister Haroun Ali Suleiman, said the losers conceded defeat.

He named the winners as Khamis Salum Ali (237 votes), District Commissioner Ussi Yahya Haji (188), Mtumwa Kassim Idd (146) and Mustafa Ahmada Ali (183).

In the election for the party’s regional chairmanship, veteran politician Foum Mati Foum lost to Haji Juma Haji in a re-run.

In Unguja South, another veteran politician and former CCM Deputy Secretary General for Zanzibar, Hassan Mussa Takrima, lost the race for NEC representation.

The winners are Isles minister Ramadhan Abdalla Shaaban, legislator Issa Baharia, Mussa Makame Dere and Jaffar Sanya.

Other winners are Union deputy ministers Mohammed Aboud and Maua Abeid Daftari, while Ussi Haji retained his position of CCM regional chairman for Unguja South.

From Shinyanga, Stephen Wang’anyi reports that Maswa MP John Shibuda came under physical attack by fellow CCM members in Kahama who accused him of supporting one of the candidates vying for the regional chairmanship.

It was reported that unidentified people threw stones at Shibuda at around 10pm on Monday, allegedly as he was moving around campaigning for Bernard Itendele – one of the contestants vying for the Shinyanga regional chairmanship.

It was alleged that Shibuda addressed in the vernacular Kisukuma members of the regional party conference uttering derogative statements against the rival, Hamisi Mgeja, the statements that apparently stirred up anarchy.

From Sumbawanga, Joshua Joel reports that some candidates in Rukwa Region were found in possession of some traditional `lucky charms` when entering the conference hall for the election.

Rukwa Regional Crime Investigating Officer Edward Bukombe said security guards at the gate discovered that some candidates carried with them folders full of herbs and roots they believed would help them win.

The suspects spotted with the `good luck charm` were named as ward secretaries Boniface Chalya and Alphonsina Kaposwe, as Rukwa Regional Commissioner Daniel ole Njoolay attributed the arrest to high security imposed to ensure free and fair elections.

From Mwanza, George Ramadhan reports that veteran politician and Ukerewe MP Getrude Mongella has expressed disappointment over the continued reports of corruption implicating some CCM members.

`It is sad to learn from the media about the ongoing corruption allegations, something that would have not been possible under the leadership of Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere when party leaders were elected on merit not through bribery.

The trend has to be stopped to make sure that a few individuals tarnishing the party’s good image are restrained,` she said.

She said previously it was not easy for candidates to feature their names vying for various leadership positions within the party due to the fact that the candidates had the obligation to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they were immaculate.

`Things appear to be different nowadays. Cash seems to have become the major determinant for some candidates known to be incapable of leading.

Others employ all sorts of dirty tricks to win elections.

Such reports on corruption are disturbing and something needs to be done to rectify the situation,` explained Mongella.

Meanwhile, immediate former CCM Secretary General Philip Mangulla, who suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Makambako councillor Deo Sanga made remarks indicating that he was deeply unhappy over what befell him.

He said that, by the look of things, time would come when the nomination of candidates to vie for parliamentary seats or councillorship on the CCM ticket would take the form of tender advertisements, whereby the highest bidder would win.

His remarks followed the announcement of the results by election supervisor Kate Kamba, who said Hamis Nurdin scored three votes, Mangulla 332 votes and Deo Sanga 681 in the race for the CCM chairmanship for Iringa Region.

The results also saw Home Affairs minister Joseph Mungai lose the race for NEC representation, where the other contestants were Dr Norman Sigalla and Science, Technology and Higher Education minister Prof Peter Msolla.

The minister won the second round of the election with 570 votes to Dr Sigalla`s 370.

Elaborating on his statement about the tender issue, Mangulla said money has become a catalyst for victory in CCM elections and candidates should be prepared to spend lots of it to become the highest bidders.
