Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala has commended the use of distance learning technology, saying it offers new visitors increased and cost-effective access to tertiary education and training in Africa.
Mukandala made the remarks during the second graduation ceremony of African Virtual University students over the weekend.
Mukandala said the technology offered limitless access where residential institutions have had serious limitations.
``Those limitations are in terms of financial, material, physical, human and educational resources,`` he said.
Prof. Mukandala explained that with the use of technology, students had access to digital resources anytime, anywhere and on any device.
``Application of ICT in higher learning institutions has strategic place in enhancing their operational efficiency and advancement,`` he said.
Mukandala stressed that this ranged from distance learning delivery modes, connectivity between institutions, ministries and stakeholders and thus making the availability of ICT service much more cost effective.
``ICT has become a key element in the way teachers and students learn,`` Prof. Mukandala stressed.
Mukandala further said education in Tanzania was overwhelmed by numerous challenges in need of alternative options.
``The use of traditional teaching and learning methods alone fail to provide sufficient access to up-to-date courses. The courses are relevant to the needs of a rapidly growing student base…,`` he expounded.
He said alternative ways to provide access to higher education via ICT- mediated distance education was in need of full exploration.
At least 113 degree students graduated over the weekend from the African Virtual University (AVU).
The university offers different degree courses through distance and e-learning.
