The government has warned importers of equipment which contain chlorofluorocarbons chemicals to be mindful of the deadline set to eliminate the use of chemicals which destroy the ozone layer.

The agreement to control the production and use of chemicals that destroy the ozone layer was passed by UN member states in Montreal, Canada who agreed that the use of the chemicals should end in 2009.

Permanent Secretary in Prime Minister`s Office, Ruth Mollel, was speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday at a stakeholder`s workshop to mark International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

Mollel said it was good for business people to stick to the deadline and consider the technological changes across the world than making Tanzania a dumping place for unwanted goods.

She said the government had done a lot to eliminate the production and use of chemicals that affected the ozone layer in an effort to implement the Montreal Agreement.

He said government had tried to educate people on the importance of using alternative chemicals and shift to modern technologies in industries.

She added that the government also provided training to technicians of electrical appliances, specifically refrigerators or air conditioners, fire extinguisher facilities, manufacture of mattresses, medicines and perfumes.

``It will be difficult to get services for equipments or systems, which use such destructive chemicals by 2010 because they will either not be available on the market or their price will be very high,`` Mollel said.

She added that it is high time for business people to see the necessity of importing equipment, which could regulate the production of destructive chemicals to support the government efforts to preserve the ozone layer.
