Health specialists are scheduled to meet in Dar es Salaam this weekend to discuss ways of improving high quality health care for women and children in the country.
Addressing journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, president of the Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania (AGOTA), Prof. Richard Lema, said the scientific conference and annual general meeting of the association would deliberate on adolescent, sexual and reproductive health issues.
``We also expect to include issues concerning family planning, HIV transmission, prenatal morbidity and mortality,`` he noted.
Prof. Lema said the meeting would draw gynecologists from all over the country who will be sensitised on how to take care of women, expectant mothers and their newborn babies.
The theme of this year is ``Maternal and Newborn Health in Tanzania``.
``Along with the conference, there will also be an exhibition of pharmaceutical products in which various pharmaceutical companies would showcase their products,`` said Prof. Lema.
Prof. Lema said the conference would be followed by an Emergency Obstetric Care (EMOC) training workshop expected to bring all AGOTA members.
``They will include medical officers in charge of district public hospitals and nurses in charge of labour wards that have been picked from twelve selected regions,`` he said.
He said the association recognised the concerted efforts being made by medical officers and labour wards to improve the well being of mothers and their newborn babies.
``That is why we have involved them in this training and conference,`` Prof. Lema said.
