The Journalists Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) will today evening award the environmental journalist of the year.
Talking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, JET executive chairman Deodatus Mfugale said: `This is the second award since September 5, last year.`
Mfugale said this year four journalists would be awarded and the overall winner would be picked from among them.
`This is different from last year’s event whereby the overall winner will be the environmental journalist for the year 2007,` he said.
`So far we have one winner from newspapers, radio, television and photography. Each winner will be awarded with 500,000/-, a trophy and a certificate,` he added.
He explained that the overall winner would scoop
The Minister`s Award for the Environmental Journalist of the Year, which is equivalent to 2m/-.
He said the award would be presented by the Minister in the Vice-President’s Office (Environment), Prof. Mark Mwandosya.
Mfugale added that Natural Resources and Tourism deputy minister Zubein Mhita would grace the awarding ceremony.
However, the JET boss said the winner from the television category would also get a special award from a Dar es Salaam-based organization, TONA cultural tourism.
He said TONA executive director Elly Kimbweleza would present the award.
`The participation of this tourism organization in this event shows that the public has started recognizing the efficacy of these competitions,`he added.
Mfugale was optimistic that in the next year`s event more people and organisations would participate in awarding some of the winners.
He said the process of scouting for the winners started in February, this year, whereby JET announced to environmental journalists to participate in the competition under the theme, `Combating the Effect of Climate Change`.
`Journalists were required to submit less than three features with less than 1500 words. For those in radio and television were supposed to air a 30-minute programme,` he said.
He said photojournalists were supposed to submit three photos related to this year’s theme.
`All works submitted to us were either published or aired between August 1, 2006 and July 31, this year,` he said.
The JET chairman explained that about 36 journalists participated in this year’s competition.
`It`s our expectation that next year more journalists will participate in the event,` he said.
