By Patrick Kisembo

The Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Basil Mramba, has challenged developing countries to put up effective mechanisms that will enable them conduct viable trade in the competitive market.

Opening a one-day East and central African regional seminar on World Trade Conformity Assessment, Quality Infrastructure Development in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Mramba said the challenge facing poor nations was to put in place all mechanisms that would make them excel in the world market.

Mramba said nations that needed to do business must ensure that all possible means were pursued to reduce technical trade barriers.

``Let`s stand on our own and be aggressive. This will help us excel in the international arena,`` he said.

The minister said such efforts would make developed countries attain knowledge on conformity in accordance with World Trade Organisation-Tanzania Bureau of Standards/Sanitary and PhytoSanitary agreements.

The seminar, which has drawn participants from Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya and Zambia, is meant to present findings of the research that has been undertaken for the past six months in each country.
