More than 40 youths who have been using illicit drugs in Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam Region, have announced the intention to abandon their use and requested the government to support them in medical treatment and provide them with capital in order to earn their living.
Speaking at an anti-drug seminar in the city recently, they said they had decided to lead normal life.
`These drugs are no good at all. We have decided to abandon using them of our own free will,` said Toni Frederick on behalf of the others.
He said after taking the decision to abandon drug abuse a major challenge which they faced was to undergo rehabilitation since most of them had been adversely affected.
`We request the government and other health providers to offer us such treatment soon so that we revert to normal life,` he said.
He added that apart from treatment, the youths also needed working equipment or capital which would enable them to establish productive ventures.
`Some of us are professionals, so it would be much more appropriate if we were provided with employment or tools,`he said.
Frederick said they had decided to form an organization called Kinondoni Anti-Drug Network whose objective would be to educate youths on the adverse effects of drug abuse.
Speaking at the seminar, some Special Seats councillors in Kinondoni District said they were ready to fund rehabilitation and treatment of the youths.
One of the councillors, Nuru Chaurembo, urged the youths to register their names with the Kinondoni municipal office.
`We will talk to the leaders of Kinondoni municipality to see how they can assist in your treatment, `she said.
For his part, CCM Mwananyamala branch chairman Rajab Mwilima said he would liaise with some leaders in the district to ensure the youths were employed.
He donated 400,000/- which would be used in the registration process of their organization.
