Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Abbas Kandoro has said that regional authorities were currently shortlisting contractors who had responded to a tender for the construction of a five-storey building to accommodate petty traders in the city before the winner for the job was picked.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday over the telephone, the RC said the exercise was moving according to plan.

`We have cleared all doubts with regard to the plot located on Lindi Street in Ilala. People have already vacated the area to give way to construction,` the RC said.

He said structural drawings had been completed and city authorities had announced a tender for the construction.

Kandoro urged petty traders and food vendors to be patient and continue with their business in their allocated areas until construction of their building was complete.

The government early this year promised to build a five-storey building in each of the three districts of Dar es Salaam Region to accommodate 10,000 petty traders.

Similar projects would also be carried out in other major urban centres in the country, such as Mwanza, Mbeya, Tanga and Dodoma.
