Striking Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Science students have appealed to the Government to solve acute problems facing them such as lack of accommodation and conducive learning environment.

They specifically asked the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education to address issues of acute accommodation shortage at the college adding that it was partly to blame for the critical situation.

Medical students boycotted classes citing poor accommodation and learning environment at the country’s independence-day medical college.

President of the Students` Organization, Edwin Chitage said:`But we blame the higher education ministry for the mess…it has failed to provide money to the college management which was allocated to finalize construction of students’ hostels.`

According to Chitage the ministry had instructed the college administration to give students pursuing field attachment money that was basically set aside for the construction of hostels.

`The college accepted the directive with the promise that the ministry will, later on, allocate some money to finalize construction works…but the ministry has not paid the promised money,`

`The college management cannot proceed with construction of hostels because of lack of funds we are facing accommodation crisis because of the ministry,` he said.

He said currently, new students` hostels lack beds and mattresses, subjecting some 124 students to critical accommodation problem out of the 310 students at the college.

The students allegedly have expressed their readiness to dig into their own pockets and purchase lacking essentials, but the college management had refused the students idea.

`We are puzzled and wondering why the management is reluctant to allow us to purchase beds and mattresses and enter the hostels,` said the student`s leader.

The students promised to continue with the strike until they come to terms with the administration on the controversies, he said.
