Muhimbili University College of Health and Allied Sciences (MUCHAS) students yesterday resumed classes after the Research and Academic Workers Union (RAWU) officials intervened and formed a special committee to work on their problems.

In an interview with The Guardian MUCHAS dean of students Dr Mugwira Mwangu explained that the committee formed included lecturers and students.

He said the students resorted to the strike because most of the committees that were formed had no student representatives and it was not possible for the administration to be aware of all the problems that they were facing.

Citing the readiness of the students to buy their own beddings to be used in the new hostels, he said it was not allowed for the students to buy their own beddings because it was not part of their agreement with the college administration.

He said the new hostels that the students wanted to shift to were presently not safe for them because they were yet to be fenced.

`Although the students are blaming the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education for not returning the 156m/-that was deducted from the renovation funds (1.2bn/-) that the students were given for field but still it wasn`t enough to complete all what is needed in the new hostels,` he explained.

He said that so far the Ministry has not yet paid the money that the students were given for field attachment and the school is not sure when it will be paid.

He added that the students will shift to the new hostels when they are completed and safe for them to stay.
