The Tanzania Media Women`s Association (Tamwa) has condemned the killing of two young schoolgirls who were raped and strangled in Ilongero Village in Singida Region last Sunday.

In a statement issued yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Tamwa appealed to relevant authorities to take urgent and necessary measures to bring those involved in the gruesome crime to justice.

According to media reports, the brutal killings of the girls, who are from the same family aged 7 and 13 years, occurred when the two were sent to water the family’s vegetable garden some distance from their home.

``Tamwa joins the family and Ilongero villagers in mourning the tragedy that has not only shocked the villagers, but also the entire nation,`` the statement, which was signed by Tamwa executive director Ananilea Nkya, read in part.

``Unfortunately, these two young girls are not alone. Recent media reports indicate an increase in rape cases in Tanzania,`` she said, adding:

``Statistics released in Parliament in July 2006, show that in 1998 there were 1,203 reported rape court cases, 2,430 cases in 1999 and 4,795 cases in 2004.``

Tamwa appealed to parents, community members and law enforcement officers to keenly look after the safety of children.
