The Government has challenged media houses in the country to promote agriculture activities, the backbone of the country`s economy and an effective weapon in the fight against poverty in the country.

`There is need for agricultural information to reach people even in the remotest areas through the media,` underlined the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives, Peniel Lyimo.

The PS made the call yesterday in Dar es Salaam when leading a delegation of the Ministry’s staff during a tour of the IPP media.

He said media houses should boost and place agriculture at its rightful place in terms of importance to the country by putting more emphasis in promoting the sector, which was the backbone of the country’s economy.

Lyimo said his ministry\'s goal was to see how it could improve its relationship with the media houses.

`Agriculture is the backbone of the country`s economy,` he specified, adding that it was the only way in which the country could get rid of poverty.

`There is a need for people to be equipped with modern agricultural tools,` he said, reiterating his call upon media houses to support the sector in the country by publishing and broadcasting all information about it.

`The Ministry endeavours to deliver quality agricultural and cooperative services, provide conducive environment to stakeholders and to build capacity of Local Government authorities.

It also intends to facilitate the private sector to contribute effectively to sustainable agricultural production, productivity and cooperative development,` he noted.

He said his ministry in collaboration with the private sector, Local Government and other service providers would provide relevant technical services in research, extension and irrigation.

He cited other areas as including plant protection, crop promotion, land use, mechanisation, agricultural inputs, information services and cooperative development.
