Stop Kadhi Court debate, Mtikila tells government

The National Chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), Christopher Mtikila, has told the government to stop any discussion on the proposed establishment of the Kadhi Court as the matter is already in court.

Mtikila said this yesterday in Dar es Salaam in reaction to a recent statement on the same matter made by Prime Minister Edward Lowassa.

Lowassa was quoted during his official tour of Mbeya Region as saying that the Law Reform Commission was still working on the issue.

The Prime Minister also declared that the commission would after completion of its task, deliberate with Muslim leaders and other stakeholders, while looking for ways to present the matter to the National Assembly.

`The statement made by Lowassa in Mbeya was totally wrong. It contradicts that of Minister for Constitution Affairs Mary Nagu, who said it was impossible to send the issue to Parliament because the matter was already in the High Court of Tanzania,` Mtikila told journalists during a news conference.

He said that Parliament was not allowed to discuss matters already in judicial stages.

`I call upon the Prime Minister to apologize to Tanzanians for the statement that he made in Mbeya,` said Mtikila.

Reverent Mtikila and the Full Salvation Church have lodged a court petition on the proposed establishment of the Kadhi Court.
