Authorities in coastal region have developed a comprehensive initiative to address all factors which cause maternal and neonatal deaths.
Speaking to a group of parliamentarians from Netherlands in Kibaha yesterday, the Regional Administrative Secretary, Gertrude Mpaka said that the initiatives are aimed at reducing deaths.
Mpaka said that communicable and non communicable diseases such as Malaria, HIV/Aids, and Tuberculosis and road traffic accidents immensely contributed to deaths.
She said that the above account for 75 per cent major causes of morbidity and mortality in the coastal region.
Deaths attributed to malaria account for 35 percent, HIV/AIDS, and TB account for 35 percent of deaths, while road traffic accidents and maternal deaths account for 5 per cent. Other diseases account for 25 percents of deaths.
`Maternal and newborn mortality are critical public health challenges in the coastal region,` she added.
She said regional, national and international programs dealing with malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB have shown success in prevention and treatment of the diseases.
