Geita Gold Mine spends 1.4bn/- on community projects

Geita Gold Mine (GGM) has spent 1.4bn/- for supporting various social projects in Geita district, Mwanza region.

Speaking to reporters early this week Monday in Geita, the GGM Managing Director, Brent Horuchuk, said that funding was committed for seven years period and it focused on education, health and management.

GGM for instance has been organizing the Kilimanjaro climb challenge since 2002, in which monies collected are donated to various beneficiaries in the country.

It has supported construction of primary and secondary schools in Geita district both of which can accommodate more than 600 students.

In addition, over 60 children and adults with cleft pallet deformity were sponsored to get special plastic surgery in Mwanza performed by Australian doctors.

Acccording to him, work place and the community HIV/Aids interventions, awareness and voluntary counselling and testing by AMREF is still going on targeting three main intervention groups, such as the mine workers, high risk groups like women, as well as communities around the mine.

GGM plans to implement an integrated malaria control programme envisaged for Geita town next year which would be financially supported by the company.

The GGM also supports an orphanage centre, a vegetable farming project at Nyakabale Agro Farm whose beneficiaries are selling their products to the mine workers.

The water it draws all the way from Lake Victoria also benefits villagers free of charge.
