The Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) has named 26 boxers to start preparations for 2008 Olympic qualifiers.
Team`s head coach Nassoro Michael said yesterday that the team would start training on November 1 at JKT Mgulani in Dar es Salaam.
The team will train under Benjamin Mwangata, Willy Isangula, Anthony Kameda and Nassoro himself.
The boxers are Muhsin Mohamed, Hassan Abdallah, Rajab Omary, Issa Athmani, Ayoub Stephan, Emilian Patrick, Ally Kimwaga, Mohamed Matumla, Mrisho Adam, Hussein Abdallah, Nassar Mafuru and Petro Mtagwa.
Others are Sebastian Temba, Hashim Simon, Godfrey Maende, Yusuph Mambo, Joseph Martin, Msafiri Majia, Leonard Machichi, Lusajo Mwaipopo, Godfrey Mbunda, Rajab Madinda, Alfred Liunga, Undule Lang’son, Bernard Kataluma, Anthony Kameda, Nassoro Michael and Willy Isanga.
He said the boxers would then be reduced to 13 on January 5.
`The selected 13 boxers will be in residential camp at JKT Mgulani,` he said.
BFT last week failed to send its team in the ongoing World Amateur Boxing Championships in Chicago, USA because of financial problems.
The championships serve as the Olympic qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Uganda national boxing team captain Sharif Bogere and team mate Phillip Adyak have vanished from their camp in Chicago.
The two fighters were last seen on Wednesday evening, according to coach Kent Musa.
The sport`s governing body, UABF had promised to get `bodyguards` to stop their members from vanishing the way a team of Egyptians had disappeared before the tournament.
The disappearance continues a worrying trend for Uganda’s sportsmen.
Early this year, two cricketers Patrick Ochan and Jimmy Okello abandoned their team at the World U-19s in Australia.
This is the second time in five years for boxers to disappear during the Olympic qualifiers.
Andaman Daku vanished from Amsterdam while in transit from the Athens Games qualifier in Morocco in 2003.
