Members of Temeke Municipal Water Committees in Dar es Salaam have been cautioned against mismanagement of funds allocated for water projects due to the latter undermining efforts to improve the quality of water services in the area.

The coordinator of Water, Environment, Hygienic and Health projects` facilitating team in the municipality, Juhudi Nyambuka cautioned that some of the committee members vied for the post after they had been convinced that they would benefit from funds allocated for the projects.

Addressing participants to a workshop on Sustainable Water Project Management that brought together participants from four wards in the district, Nyambuka warned members to abstain from politics in the course of implementing the water projects.

Briefing on lessons drawn from the workshop, one of the participants said it gave them the opportunity to take into account their (water committee members) responsibilities in supervising water projects in their respective areas.

`It is a wrong perception for individuals to vie for the committee membership with the sole intention to benefit out of the funds collected for the water projects in the area. The motto should be quality service to the people,` Nyambuka insisted.

She said in the near future, the committees would be empowered legally to make sure that the final say in running the projects remained in the hands of the wananchi instead of government officials alone.
