A report on controversial surgeries carried out last week by doctors at the Muhimbili National Hospital will be submitted to the government today.

The Minister for Health and Social Welfare Prof. David Mwakyusa told Parliament yesterday that Muhimbili Board of Directors had formed a probe committee on November 2, to investigate into the circumstances that led to the operations that have generated public debate.

The unusual event happened on November 1, this year when two patients -Emmanuel Didas (20) who was to undergo a leg operation had his head operated and Emmanuel Mgaya (19) who was to undergo a head surgery was operated on his leg instead.

Giving the government statement yesterday Prof Mwakyusa said the two doctors who carried out the operations had been suspended.

“The nurses who were on call on that day have as well been requested to make their statements,” he said.

Prof. Mwakyusa called on the wananchi to be patient as the government works on the committee’s report.

“We will go through the report and issue a statement to the public,” he said.

He said the government had been disappointed by what happened and had sent its apologies to the victims and family members.

The minister said Mgaya who had his leg operated on was doing well, while Didas had gained consciousness.
