Tanzania is endowed with abundant natural resources, which include all sorts of minerals, gemstones, natural tourist attractions and huge chunks of arable land.
It specifically boasts of Tanzanite, which is a peculiar gemstone found only in Tanzania, and is much demanded in the international market.
Our country ranks as the third major producer of gold in Africa after South Africa and Ghana.
It stands a chance of producing even more gold, because new deposits keep being discovered.
With all these blessings, the matter that has kept cropping up is the whole issue of what we benefit from these minerals as a nation.
Since assuming power, and for a long time too, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has made returns on mining as one of his major areas of focus, while being careful not to flout the arrangements that he found in place.
One of his first acts was to call for a review of existing mining contracts, as he sought for a win-win situation.
All this means that President Kikwete has a genuine and transparent intention to resolve all problems that make this country not to enjoy its full potential.
