Five Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) employees died yesterday when their vehicle rammed into a lorry parked at the roadside at Chimala in Mbarali District, Mbeya Region.

The crash, which left four other people critically injured, occurred a mere two days after 15 people died and 16 were hurt in a similar road accident in the region.

Mbeya Regional Police Commander Suleiman Kova confirmed the incident, saying it occurred at around 7:15 am as the workers drove to Chimala Township to fix broken high-tension electric poles.

Survivors gave the name of the driver of the Tanesco vehicle, with registration number SU 33510, as Moses Mwaisaka.

They said he was trying to avoid crashing into the parked lorry when he discovered that two speeding passenger buses were behind him.

“Our driver tried to stop but the vehicle veered and hit the back of the lorry and overturned, killing five people on the spot,” explained acting Mbeya regional Tanesco manager Method Byabato.

He identified the deceased as Atson Limbo, Vatus Nchimbi, Mama Mwakanyamale and two other people only as Komba and Hussein.

The survivors are Odilia Milinga and three other casual labourers whose names could not be established immediately.

The bodies are preserved at the Chimala Mission Hospital, where the injured survivors are undergoing treatment.
