The visiting wife of the British Prime Minister, Sarah Brown who is on a tour of the country, yesterday visited Muhimbili National Hospital where she saw improved conditions of maternal services.

The purpose of her tour was to see the extent maternal services have been transformed after some doctors and nurses at the hospital underwent maternal health training, according to a statement issued by the British High Commission.

The training, which took place in September this year, was conducted by the UK-based International Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The training was meant to reduce the number of maternal deaths in the country.

During her tour of Muhimbili National Hospital, Sarah was accompanied by the First Lady, Mama Salma Kikwete.

MNH Director Leonard Lema said the British government decided to provide training to the local doctors because of the good relationship between the two countries.

He said maternal deaths were still a big challenge to Tanzania where a lot of people died during and after birth due to different birth complications.
