The Institute of Social Work (ISW) will soon acquire 100 hectares of land in Bagamoyo District, Coast Region, in response to overwhelming student demand for the courses it offers.

`This is one of our top priorities to expand our teaching and learning horizon in this area of social work,` the institute`s Principal, Dr. Rwegoshora Hossea, said on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam.

He said the earmarked new institute`s campus is expected to be located near Chalinze township.

`The area will be able to accommodate the increasing student demands in the country,` Dr. Hossea said, adding that the new expansion would make the institute have two major campuses.

He explained that the college`s outlook was to meet all people across Tanzania and deliver its services at optimum points, hence improve the country’s socio-economic development.

He said the institute now was getting more applicants for different courses in social work and other related courses such as postgraduate diploma in social work and law, mediation and arbitration.

According to Dr. Hossea, today about 337 students from different fields of study will be graduating from the institute.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. David Mwakyusa, will grace the graduation ceremony.

Dr Eginald Mihayo, ISW Director of Studie,s said: “The institute has more than 1900 students pursuing different courses, ranging from certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, postgraduate diplomas and degrees.`

`If we can manage to improve our infrastructures like enough lecture theatres, seminar rooms, library and other teaching and learning environment the institute will be able to introduce new unique programmes,` he said.

Dr. Mihayo further said in collaboration with Jane Addams School of Social Work, the institute had established an outreach programme in Temeke, Iringa and Kinondoni municipalities.

ISW Director of Finance and Administration Mbonimpaye Mpango said the institute was constructing a 3.5bn/- modern information centre.

“The new building will be able to shelter more than 800 students at a time. But the speed of construction is a little bit slow which might delay its completion,” Mpango said.
