Seven universities from Africa and Europe have signed an agreement to exchange experts in different academic programmes.

The agreement was signed on Monday in Zanzibar involving Pretoria University in South Africa, Makerere in Uganda, University of Dar es Salaam, and University of Mozambique.

Other universities were Tunguu of Zanzibar, Turku School of Economics and Human Rights College of Abo Abo Academy both of Finland.

Giving details, the coordinator of the signing ceremony Mtoro Almas Ali from the University of Tunguu in Zanzibar said the agreement signed would last two years whereby teachers from the universities would get the opportunity to exchange expertise with students and gain from various academic programmes.

`The initial stage of the project will cost Euro12, 500 and the said amount would be funded by the government of Finland. The said project would be beneficial to Tunguu University due to being new in the academic field.

This is a step forward for Zanzibar especially in exchanging expertise and students with universities in Finland and Africa,` he said.

Commenting on the signed agreement, the Deputy Chancellor of Tunguu University, Mustafa Roshash, said the plan came at the right time as it would fulfill students’ and lecturers’ learning dreams by making them expand their horizons.

`I would like to take this opportunity to thank all representatives from Turku University from Finland and the Human Rights College of Abo Academy for working hand in hand to improve education in East Africa,` said Roshash.

He said the demand for higher learning was high calling for an increase of universities.

Meanwhile the coordinator of the programme from Abo Academy University Katarina Frostell said the programme endeavoured to create understanding for students and lecturers in universities.

He said society must be ready to face the challenges in this world of globalisation adding: `Universities must provide quality education that will cope with the competition and train the would-be leaders of tomorrow.`
