Tanga Regional Commissioner Mohamed Abdulaziz has called on the public to report to him names and force numbers of prison warders who demand bribes from them so that he can take disciplinary action against them.
The move comes in the wake of media reports that prison officers have been exhorting bribes from people who visit their relatives serving sentences in the region’s jails.
Abdulaziz told PST over the weekend that preliminary investigation had established that the allegations were untrue as no officer in the force had so far been implicated in the alleged scam.
``Of course people are accorded limited time to talk to their relatives, but nobody has been asking for bribes on this score,`` he said, adding that there was no reason for prison warders to ask for bribes, but added that if any officer got caught seeking bribes ``the law would take its course``.
Elaborating, he said if there was anybody who had been asked to offer bribes in order to be accorded the said services in any of the prisons in the region, they should report the said officers to relevant authorities in order to arrest the situation.
``In principle, as Tanga Regional Commissioner, I have never received any reports on any type of harassment by prison officers who seek bribes prior to provision of services in the region`s jails,`` he said.
Of late there have been complaints by residents of Tanga Region alleging that prison officers have been demanding bribes from them whenever they want to see their jailed relatives.
