By Khalfan Said

The condition of Emmanuel Didas, a patient who early this month was involved in a surgical mix-up at the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) in Dar es Salaam, is improving, according to the institute`s Public Relation Officer, Almas Jumaa.

The Guardian visited MOI yesterday and found him watching television in his private ward. `His condition is improving, he can speak now,` said Jumaa, who stood next to Didas` bed.

Before he was interviewed and his photograph taken, Jumaa introduced Didas to The Guardian team: `These are news men from The Guardian, have you ever met with any of them before?`

Didas replied: `Yes I remember one.` And he pointed a finger at our photographer.

When he was asked about his condition, Didas replied in his own words: `I am feeling a little bit better.` However, his tone was still low.

Jumaa informed later on that Didas was ready for a trip to India for further treatment as the government promised his family recently.

`I can confirm to you that, the doctors say his condition will soon allow him to travel,` said Jumaa.

He also refuted reports that, Didas had his right part of the body paralysed. `You know this guy was in a coma, and he was not able to do anything without assistance.

That is why people, including his family members, thought that he was paralysed. But let me tell you one thing. In this condition the body might look paralysed, but it isn’t,` he explained.

Emmanuel Didas was admitted to MOI early this month for a leg operation. Strangely, he ended by undergoing a head surgery.

Another patient, Emmanuel Mgaya, who was also brought to the hospital for head operation had his leg operated on, instead.

Mgaya, died last week from post-surgery complications, as he later underwent head surgery only days to his death.
