By David Mambo, Zanzibar

The mobile phone company Celtel has donated 65 computers to various schools in Zanzibar. Zanzibar President Abeid Amani Karume received the donation on behalf of the schools.

Speaking shortly after he received the donation from Celtel, Tanzania`s managing director Bashir Arafeh, Karume said that his government is making efforts to ensure that its people cope with the current technology.

`I thank Celtel Tanzania Ltd for their contribution in both Tanzania Mainland and here in Zanzibar. The computers will help the entire community as well as the coming generation,` he said.

He said that his government has received the donations at the right moment when it was planning to set policies to improve the standard of secondary education on the Isles.

`Our government gives priority to the education sector. It is a long time investment, that I believe will help the coming generation cope with globalisation,` he added.

For his part, Bashir told Karume that his company under the project dubbed `Build the Nation` plans to work with the community in all countries where it operates.

‘Build Our Nation`, Programme was launched way back in May 2004 with its first activity being donation of books to schools in various parts of the country.
