Kikwete pardons more than 4,000 prisoners at Uhuru

President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday pardoned 4,049 prisoners during the marking of 46 years of the country’s independence.

An official statement issued by the Minister of Home Affairs, Joseph Mungai in Dar es Salaam, said prisoners who qualified to the presidential amnesty were categorized in different groups.

It included those who had already spent not less than 10 and below 5-years in prison at the time when the country celebrates its independence day.

The amnesty also covered medically-approved sick prisoners, especially those suffering from HIV/ADS, Tuberculosis, cancer, who are at the terminal stage.

Kikwete`s amnesty was also extended to elders aged 70-years and above, who have been approved by a penal of medical doctors under the chairmanship of Regional or District Medical Officer; women, who got into prisons while pregnant, or entered into prison with their infants, and disabled prisoners.
