Scientists and engineers have been challenged to be models of emulation for ``continuously endeavouring to improve infrastructure, build up capable workforce, promote synergy and collaborative efforts`` towards improving medical services and health care.
The challenge to that end was made by University of Dar es Salaam Vice-Chacellor Professor Rwekaza Mukandala in his opening speech of the 4th Africa Materials Research Society International Conference that kicked off yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
The conference is being attended by some 150 participants from within and outside the African continent at the facilitation of the USA and various national and international stakeholders.
Prof Mukandala, in a speech read on his behalf by the Dean of Graduate School at the University of Dar es Salaam, Professor Rogath Kivaisi, said modern society holds greater expectation in health care and endeavours towards better quality of life that was posed with new threats to health created new opportunities, challenges and the need for new investments.
He said at the same time, a better-educated and well-informed society had greater confidence in materials science and engineering, making science and technology an essential requirement for modern medicine and the effective promotion of economic growth.
``As scientists and engineers, we have to continuously endeavour to improve our infrastructure, build capable workforce, promote synergy and collaborative efforts, provide effective arrangement for supporting research, develop research programmes that are focused and targeted, encourage innovation, develop strategy for technology transfer, and harness ICT in improving medical services and health care,`` he said.
