Entrenchment of graft blamed on govt inaction

By Jane Mkonya

A Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture official, Specioza Mashauri, has said that inaction by the government to discipline its corrupt officials fuels erosion of morals in the country.

Speaking at a function to mark the National Ethics Day organised by the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) on Monday in Dar es Salaam, Mashauri said moral decay, including the entrenchment of corruption in society, was fueled through the promulgation of policies and laws which were half-heartedly implemented or enforced.

She said some government officials engaged in corruption, thus promoting the erosion of morals in the society.

``We hear about some corrupt government officials daily but nothing is done to sack or discipline them. How will ordinary people abide by good ethics if those leading them are the principal defaulters?`` she queried.

She urged the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to re-examine tax rates charged to ensure they could easily be paid by taxpayers.

``The re-examination should be done in order to restore faith in the Authority by taxpayers. The restoration of confidence is a major tool to preventing and combating corruption in the private sector,`` she said.
