The Government of Zanzibar has requested the Chinese government to assist in the construction of a new television station to replace the present which is too old to cater for the needs of the people.
The request has been made by the Zanzibar Government Deputy Chief Minister, who is also the Minister for Information, culture and Sports, Ali Juma Shamuhuna during his talks with the Chinese envoy Liu Xinsheng in Zanzibar this week.
Shamuhuna said ``The television station in Zanzibar is in bad state because its construction took place a long time ago. We need a more advanced television station.``
He said TVZ was constructed in 1970 adding that the station now suffered from not only old buildings but also lack of working facilities.
The Minister said the government of Japan had been maintaining the said station saying there was more to be done to improve the old Analogy system to the digital one.
Apart from seeking assistance in the construction of the station, Shamuhuna called upon China to help repair the government`s printing factory due to the machines being too old to print government documents.
``The government can not print its documents at private institutes or factories. We must improve our printing factory,`` said Shamuhuna.
He also mentioned the Zanzibar Radio Station as one of the areas in need of assistance due to its infrastructure calling for repair.
``Radio Zanzibar is now forced to use FM transmission due to its transmitter being too old to provide the service.``
Meanwhile the Chinese envoy has reiterated his government's cooperation with Zanzibar saying he will forward the request and follow up to see if it was possible to provide the required support.
China has also accepted to rehabilitate the Amaan Stadium.
