Member states of the Southern and Eastern Africa Copyright Network (SEACONET) are to launch the network`s first General Assembly next month in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Speaking in an interview with this paper, the Chief Executive Officer of a Dar es Salaam-based Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA), Stephen Mtetewaunga, said the aim of the meeting was to provide a platform to discuss and share information on different issues in establishing and launching SEACONET.

He said other SEACONET activities would involve data collection, compilation, and publication as well as development of a general data base of information on copyright industries, copyright and related rights.

On the schedule of events for the year, Mtetewaunga said there would be three others including legislation process in member states.

Others, he said are development of guidelines for intellectual property policy formulation, identification of training needs of SEACONET potential member countries and development of curricula training modules modeled on regional examples.

He said although a number of training programmes have been organised in the region, ``some of these have not taken into account the different levels of development of SEACONET potential member countries.``

He added that ``The meeting therefore proposed the development of curricula taking into consideration specific needs of member countries at different levels of development.``

On the initial project meeting, it was agreed for organising training of trainers course on copyright and related rights.

He revealed further that the meeting also unanimously agreed to organise an anti-piracy initiatives forum at regional level.
