A NON-governmental organisation operating in Mbozi District, Mbeya Region, Mbozi Social and Economic Development Unit (MSEDU), has embarked on a tree planting campaign to help district residents improve the condition and productivity of degraded areas including rural and urban settlements.
Charles Halinga, managing partner of a Dar es Salaam-based firm - C.H. Halinga and Associates - made the remarks at the MSEDU launch held in Dar es Salaam on Monday.
He said the project would help residents prevent and control the degradation of land, water vegetation and air that constitute their life support systems and assist them live in safe, healthy, productive and aesthetically pleasing surroundings.
``This is a new strategy being formed by MSEDU members to protect water sources and prevent the degradation of land, conserve and enhance our natural and man-made heritage, including the biological diversity of the unique ecosystems of Tanzania,`` he said.
He said some MSEDU members had been trained in conservation and management of tree planting so that they can reduce environmental degradation with a view to protecting water sources.
