Enegy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) yesterday issued licenses to five oil companies to provide service on petroleum sector.
Speaking yesterday during the handing over ceremony held in Dar es Salaam, the Director General of EWURA, Haruna Masebu, said the licences issued by the energy and water watchdog organisation would be valid for three years.
He said among the first 26 companies which applied for licenses in petroleum sector, three met the qualifications and were issued with wholesale licenses while two among the ten petrol stations which applied for license qualified for retail licenses.
He mentioned the companies which qualified for wholesale license as EUROPRODUCTS, SAMCHIRA and MGS International while Ilula and Chimala Filling stations were issued with retail licenses.
``The licenses issued are not just pieces of paper, but legal documents with the rights and responsibilities of the company issued with them,`` said Masebu.
Masebu further said that the watchdog had so far received 275 applications from various companies, which offer service in oil, among them 182 retails, 82 wholesale, two refinery, one pipeline, one waste oil recycling, six transportation and one consumer installation.
``EWURA has conducted initial assessment on the applications. Once the process is through we will issue licenses to companies which meet the qualification,`` he said.
For his part, the Minister for Energy and Minerals, Nazir Karamagi, said petroleum oil has great contribution to the country`s economy because it remains the only source of energy in transportation.
He said the contribution by EWURA in supervising petroleum sector is vital in providing access and distribution of the product.
