President Jakaya Kikwete has appointed Charles Ekelege, the new Managing Director of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS).

According to a statement released over the weekend by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing, Kikwete has nominated Ekelege in accordance with Tanzania Bureau of Standards Act of 1975 on November 26, this year.

Ekelege has been the TBS`s Acting Managing Director since the retirement of TBS`s former boss Daimon Mwakyembe, in March this year.

The management and control of TBS is vested in the Executive Council consisting of the Chairman as well as managing director, and nine members appointed by the President and the Minister for Industry, and Trade respectively.

TBS was established under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Marketing by an Act of Parliament, the Standards Act No.3 of 1975 as the National Standards Institute and became operational in April 1976.

It was specifically mandated to undertake measures for quality control of products of all descriptions, promote standardization in industry and commerce.

The body was subsequently renamed Tanzania Bureau of Standards through an amendment to the Act by Act No.1 of 1977.

The Director of TBS is the Chief Executive responsible for the day to day administration.

Ekelege takes over from Daimon Mwakyembe who served the bureau for more than 28 years. Mwakyembe retired as TBS chief since his appointment as a director in 1992.
