By Amri Lugungulo, PST

At last the problem of water shortage which had dogged Pugu Secondary School and its neighbourhood for a long time will soon be alleviated after a new source of water supply was recently established at Majohe in Ilala municipality, Dar es Salaam Region.

According to the school`s headmaster, Bushiry Shellimoh, who talked to PST on Wednesday, the government was finalising a project which would start providing the area with water from January, next year.

``We hope that, as of January, next year water supply to the school will no longer be a problem to us,`` he said adding that the work of laying the pipes from Majohe village was underway and would be completed soon before January next year.

The project is the result of a visit to the school by Education and Vocational Training Deputy Minister Mwantumu Mahiza sometime this year where she pledged to provide water to the school and its neighbourhood.

Formerly, the school, which has about 600 students, and its neighourhood used to draw water from a source commonly known as Pondi, located some few metres from the school compound, but which was now almost dry due to environmental destruction in its vicinity, mainly caused by felling of trees for commercial and domestic purposes.

Elaborating, he said the school was currently buying at least 15,000 litres of water after three days at a cost of 60,000/- for use at the school.

``The government provides 1m/- per month for the purchase of water for use at the school while students and teachers buy their drinking and washing water,`` he said, adding that a bucket of water costs 100/-.

For residents of Gulaka Kwalala and Pugu Kajiungeni, the story is quite different as they said they had to look for water from boreholes or deep wells whose water was normally unfit for consumption.
