Outgoing Tanzanian ambassador to South Africa Emmanuel Mwambulukutu, who was attacked by gangsters at a party to bid him farewell, is still in the intensive care unit in a Pretoria hospital.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Deputy Minister Seif Iddi told The Guardian in a telephone interview yesterday that the envoy was still admitted to Pretoria East Hospital and was being helped by a machines to breath.
``He is still in the Intensive Care Unit up to now, but his condition is not bad,`` said the deputy minister in a brief interview.
The envoy was rushed to hospital and put in an ICU last Friday after armed robbers beat him up at night at around 2200 South African time, according to information gathered from various sources, including the BBC.
According to the information, Mwambulukutu, who was due to fly back home after completing his tenure of service there, was attacked together with six other people, including his wife.
They were all taken to hospital after the attack.
``Quite a few people were assaulted, hit with bottles. They kept threatening my 15-year-old daughter with rape,`` Mwambulukutu was quoted as saying in pain.
The bandits threatened invited guests with weapons, and disappeared with the ambassadors’ own Mercedes car, which local police located later using a satellite tracking device.
One man was arrested after being shot and wounded in the process.
He was taken to hospital where he was admitted under police guard.
Iddi said the government would write the South African government a letter to demand explanation regarding the incident.
