Various religious institutions under the international non-governmental organisation New Life Foundation are to hold a two-day workshop in Moshi municipality, Kilimanjaro Region, to deliberate on the effects of modern technology and communications on children worldwide.
The president of New Life Foundation in Tanzania, Reverend Glorious Shoo, said at the weekend in a statement that the workshop would be held from January 23 to 24, this year, and would attract more than 200 participants.
He said the workshop would bring together various global institutions including World Vision, Comparison and children under the care of New Life Foundation where the effects of modern technology including newspapers, cellphones, television, the internet and radio would be discussed.
``The workshop will also discuss the problems faced by children in developing and developed countries who lack various public services including health, water and education,`` he said.
He lamented indiscriminate imitation of Western culture by people in developing countries where traditional discipline, peace and love for children were gradually being eroded.
However, he said there were still some communities which had not changed their traditional ideals despite the immense wave of Western cultures sweeping over the world through the internet and other media.
The cleric said the crime rate in the world was on the increase as most communities had forsaken their traditions and hence found themselves engulfed in a chain of vices such as banditry, superstition and corruption.
Other participants in the workshop, according to Shoo, would be government and religious officials, members of the press, internet service providers and cellphone companies.
