The opposition camp in the country has urged their Kenyan counterparts to maintain peace and stability in the fight for their rights.
The leader of the opposition in Parliament, Hamad Rashid Mohammed, lodged the appeal in Dar es salaam on Tuesday at a press conference during which he delivered his camp`s New Year`s message to Tanzanians.
``A message to our colleagues in Kenya is for them to strive for peace and stability as they fight for their rights through demonstrations and legal recourse, because people greedy with power care less about plunging the country in conflict and killings, except their resolve to remain in power,`` said Mohammed.
He urged the government of Tanzania to learn from what happened in Kenya so that similar events do not reccur in the country.
The opposition leaders also called on the government to brace itself for a possible refugee influx from Kenya as some Kenyan nationals had began crossing into the country through North-Pemba and other regions bordering Kenya.
Mohammed said that despite the small number of members of the opposition in the House, a paltry 45 out of 274, the opposition camp remained an alternative voice for Tanzanians.
He said last year, the opposition managed to draw the attention of the public to acts of corruption, especially how people were not benefiting from their vast natural resources.
The House opposition leader said that his camp sees 2008 as decisive and appropriate for the review of the country`s constitution.
``Constitutional change is something that cannot be avoided. The opposition wing in 2008 will step up efforts to discuss the matter, which is a very important agenda for the country,``he said
