The Iranian ambassador to Tanzania, Abbas Vaezi, has called on Tanzanians and the world community to stand up and end the oppression committed by tyrant rulers so that justice and peace could prevail in the world.

Vaezi made the call when he addressed participants to a one-day seminar on Imam Hussein and the philosophy he espoused, dubbed Ashura.

Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, is regarded as one of the greatest scholars and leaders in Islam.

The envoy said justice in the society cannot be achieved unless people stood up to eradicate all forms of oppression and evils that hinder social, cultural and religious advancement.

``The philosophy of Ashura denotes a total and unequivocal elimination of all kinds of oppression which are being committed by greedy leaders against their people, including the domination of smaller and weaker nations by bigger and stronger nations,`` Vaezi said.

According to him, Imam Hussein rejected evils by uprising against a tyrant leader of his time until he was mercilessly murdered by one Yazid bin Muawiyyah in the year 61 AH at Karbala in Iraq.

He said Hussein refused to bow to Yazid`s pressure and today the entire world knows that the imam sacrificed his life and his entire family for the sake of peace, unity and freedom of not only Muslims, but for the entire humanity.

``That is what we are striving to achieve and this is actually the whole idea of organizing such a seminar today, we need freedom and defend the freedom of expression``, the ambassador stressed.

Speaking at the occasion, Ahmad Mansur, the Syrian Ambassador to Tanzania said if Imam Hussein had not sacrificed his life for the sake of justice, equality and human dignity, the whole world would have nothing, but contracted wars as it was during the era of ignorance and oppression.

``We are living in a most civilized world today, people want to see hegemony of some rogue states oppressing others eliminated,`` he said.

He said let us be serious with our deeds and should participate in all political processes aimed at eradicating tyranny, oppression and hegemony on our people.

He urged people not to accept oppression of any form from any one, including states that do not accept in freedom of expression and co-existence with other nations.

The seminar also dwelt deeply on, among other things, Islam`s fundamental teachings as directed towards social supervision in the community, invitation to good and abstention from corruption and selfishness.

The embassy\'s Cultural Centre organised the seminar.
