Mbeya Regional Police Commander Suleiman Kova yesterday said that the situation at the Tanzania-Zambian border has returned to normal after two days of unrest.
Zambian traders of Nakonde District in neighbouring Zambia, which shares a border with Tunduma Township, are alleged to have ignited the fracas that occurred at a Zambian revenue office on Wednesday.
The RPC told The Guardian in a telephone interview that there were allegations made by Tanzanian traders blaming the Zambian revenue authority for delays in clearing their cargo.
``Due to problems on the Zambian side, vehicles from our side could not cross the border, likewise those from the other side,`` said Kova.
The RPC said police in Mbeya were ready to act if the Zambian traders crossed the border.
``We will cooperate through good neighbourhood arrangements with our Zambian counterparts to bring the situation back to normal should any chaos spill over to the Tanzania side,`` said Kova.
On Thursday, the Tanzania-Zambian border was closed for about seven hours.
