Kikwete: Govt committed to modern communication technology

The government has epressed its commitment to integrate Tanzania into emerging economies through the application of modern communication technology.

President Jakaya Kikwete said recently during an audience with a a delegation of a mobile phone service company, Zantel, at the State House in Dar es Salaam that efforts to open the country to world-class communication were necessary for the realisation of the country`s objectives.

The president commended efforts to open to modern communication as crucial for the liberalisation of the communication industry.

It is possible to transform the economy of this country from agrarian to modern farming.

A reliable communication network is one of the basic tools to have our set objectives realized, said the president.

He assured investors of improved investment climate for the convenience of parties, the investors and the people.

Zantel chairman Salem Al Sharhan, Etisalat chief executive officer Jamal Al Jarwan, Zantel chief executive officer Noel Herrity and other high-ranking officials from the companies thanked the government of Tanzania for cooperation since the inauguration of its services in the country.

The delegation informed the president that the company recorded growth in the market share from 3 per cent to 10 per cent in eighteen months.

Herrity said Zantel was determined to advance communication technology in the country and extend the service to reach everyone including small-scale entrepreneurs in remote villages.

Jamal Al Jarwan pledged provision of high-quality services by Zantel at an affordable cost to help open up business opportunities for the country.

We believe it is the optimal platform upon which we can build our unique brand with the ultimate goal of better servces to our customers.

Zantel the Chief executives said that the company has its own international gateway and was the first to reduce rates on international calls by 60 per cent, the first to introduce wireless internet in Tanzania and the first to introduce per second billing covering Zanzibar, Pemba and mainland Tanzania.

Zantel has a new logo reflecting freshness, boldness and vitality, communicating the idea of heroism.

Zantel shareholders include the government of Zanzibar, Emirates.

Telecomunication Corporation (ETISALAT) based in the United Arab Emirates, Kintbury Investments based in the Canary islands and MEECO International of Tanzania.
