By Mwinyi Sadallah, Zanzibar

President Amani Abeid Karume has endorsed a law that would allow members of the House of Representatives to hoist the House flag during official functions in their constituency.

Minister of State in the Chief Minister`s Office Machano Othman Saidi told the House of Representatives recently currently in session in Zanzibar when responding to a question by Muyuni legislator Ramadhan Nyonje Pandu, who had wanted to know when the law would come into effect, considering that some members owned personal cars.

``The law is now operative after the president`s assent. The move is part of implementation of immunities and privileges for members of the House under Section 8 (2) (a) (b), which allows members of the council to hoist flags in their constituency, `` said Machano.

Machano clarified that under the said law, a representative would be allowed to hoist a flag during public rallies or when in convoys.

He further said the government of Zanzibar was looking for funds to buy cars for members of the House to enable them perform their duties diligently.

``The government is looking into whether a development fund should be established for development activities in all the 50 constituencies in Unguja and Pemba. We intend to rent offices in the respective areas for workers,`` said Machano.
