The Small Industries Development Organisation (SIDO), in collaboration with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco), has initiated a project to alleviate poverty in rural areas.

The project called Tanzania Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project to Sustain Poverty Alleviation (TREESPA) targets on developing rural wealth creating sectors by identifying and specifying their top priority energy services.

Speaking to The Guardian in an interview on the sidelines of a Second three-day Purchaser Group Meeting of Treespa in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Emmanuel Toonge Saiguran, the Director of Technology Development and Planning, SIDO said the main purpose of the project is to empower people in rural areas so that they could produce effectively using energy efficient electrical equipment.

``By improving the energy efficiency of machines and accessories, light, heat, cold, mobility and more, shaft power can be obtained from less energy,`` Saiguran said.

He added that by use of less energy in production activities and services for the same outputs, implies saving on electricity to the national grid, reducing cost of production and services thus realising higher profit margins.

He said energy efficiency is used as a tool to reduce its intensity, which is the energy utilisation relative to the total output, adding that the improved energy efficiency is often used as a tool to achieve sustainable development.

He said the meeting would seek to reinforce dialogue between representatives from actors in rural business and productivity sectors and suppliers of modern energy around best practice in energy services to meet the needs of rural wealth creating activities.

He said the importance of this dialogue is to ensure that buyers of the equipment and end users get the best technologies according to their priority needs.

``Manufacturers and suppliers will work closely to provide reliable, efficient and effective after sales services,`` he said.

Ultimately, Saiguran said, a sustainable and ample supply of modern energy in rural areas is one key to economic growth and poverty reduction.

Attending the meeting are representatives from Tanesco, SIDO, Lehmann’s (T) Limited, TIRDO, A-Consult AB, DIT, CTI and TCCIA.
