Tanzania`s university students will from May this year access their examination results through mobile phone text messages (SMS), according to a local Information Technology (IT) expert.

The executive director of Easy Life Group (T) Limited, Benjamin Sitta, said yesterday in Dar es Salaam that the use of mobile phone has widely expanded and starting this year, students will access their exam results through their mobile phones.

The expert said the new system would help students and people in remote areas to easily access the results.

He said through text messages, university students would not waste time and money to look for results mainly in urban or city designated centers only.

Last year, secondary school students accessed their examination results easily, said Sitta.

``The only problem we encountered last year was that some students failed to follow instructions or forgot their examination numbers,`` he said.

Use of this system would be widely spread across all levels of education to include Standard Seven school leavers in future.

Mobile phone companies commissioned to deliver the service include Vodacom, Celtel and Tigo.

According to Sitta, the system becomes operative only soon after the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training has released the exam results.

He therefore urged the government to continue improving the country`s IT infrastructure to help improve people`s livelihoods.
