Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) chairman President Jakaya Kikwete has said CCM will use 2008 to strengthen cooperation with opposition parties in the country.

Kikwete made the remarks in Pemba during his speech ahead of the birthday of the ruling party tomorrow.

He used the opportunity to remind CCM leaders to fulfill their responsibilities to the people as stipulated in the party’s 2005 election manifesto.

``The public is not happy to see corrupt and unethical leaders. We call upon leaders to be exemplary,`` said Kikwete.

President Kikwete further clarified his stand on leaders to draw a line between public leadership and business.

He mentioned responsibilities as the implementation of the 2005 CCM election manifesto, strengthening relationships between CCM and other political parties and making preparations for CCM local government elections.

He mentioned others as improving the Permanent Voter Register, monitoring leaders` ethical codes and leadership, overseeing community elections and to implement projects that would strengthen the party.

Addressing the nation at the commemoration of CCM`s 31 years of existence at Gombani Stadium, Chake Chake, Pemba , the CCM chairman also said the relations that govern political parties have two faces--competitiveness and co-operation.

He clarified that competitiveness comes during elections and once elections were over all parties work to build the nation.

``To strengthen co-operation and relationships among CCM or government and political parties has been my intention since you gave me the honour to lead this nation in 2005,`` said Kikwete.

``I would like CCM to show examples in this matter and also to show that opposition in politics do not mean hatred or lack of collaboration,`` he said.

He said parties` relations would gain strength through the Parliament and the Tanzania Centre for Democracy under the United Democratic Party chairman, John Cheyo.

CCM was born on February 5 in 1977 after the merging of TANU and Afro Shiraz Party.
