The government has warned of stringent measures against members of the police force who humiliate innocent people. Public Safety and Security deputy minister Mohamed Aboud issued the warning yesterday in the National Aseembly when responding to a supplementary question by Zito Kabwe (Kigoma-North, Chadema), who had wanted to know government plans to discipline police belittling the people.

He informed the House that the government had formed a special committee to investigate reported cases of members of the force humiliating innocent citizens for appropriate action to be taken against the culprits.

Aboud made a reference to a young girl, Alice Saria, who was humiliated and beaten up severely by the police after being accused of stealing 400,000/-from her employer, one Sia Lymo.

The deputy minister told the House that after getting the complaints against two policemen at Kijitonyama station in Dar es Salaam, a special committee was formed and worked on the matter and the suspects had been taken to court to face justice.

Over the last few years, there has been increasing incidents of some members of the police beating up people, especially during interrogation, causing them serious health complications and physical disorder, said Aboud.
