`Introduce governance in secondary education curriculum`

The government has been challenged to introduce the subject of governance in the secondary school curriculum to make students and the entire public be able to fight corruption in the country.

Speaking during a two-day seminar over the weekend at Shabaan Robert Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, seminar facilitator Deen Nathwani, said time had come for students to be well equipped with good governance spirit.

He said students needed to be well-empowered with good leadership knowledge from seconday education level.

``This will make them utilise public resources wisely for the public interests,`` he said.

Nathwani challenged the government to introduce good governance as a subject in schools in order to produce morally right and disciplined leaders who would diligently manage public resources.

Citing cases like that of Bank of Tanzania (BoT) where a lot of money had disappeared through some banks offcials, he said it was a result of low level of good governance spirit.

Abdullah Nassoro, a Form Five student appealed to the government to include the subject in secondary schools` curricullum.

Nassoro thanked the school management for organising the seminar, saying it had helped students to understand what leadership was all about.

For her part, Dorica Burengelo, who is a Form Three student said that a good leader would usually show the way for others to follow.

Shabaan Robert Secondary School`s management organised the seminar for prefects and class representatives with the aim to build capacity of leadership amongst students.
