International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss- Kahn held talks with President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday in a closed-door meeting at the State House in Dar es Salaam.

Strauss-Kahn is leading an IMF delegation in the country on a tour geared to better understanding of the social and economic situation of the country.

Briefing the press after the closed-door meeting with President Kikwete, the IMF boss said they had a productive discussion on the country`s economic outlook and challenges to be met as the country strives to reduce poverty.

He said they also had an opportunity to explore regional issues including the political agreement in Kenya, adding that they looked forward to its successful implementation.

Strauss- Kahn said he was delighted by President Kikwete`s acceptance to host a conference in Tanzania later this year on the IMF and Africa to be attended, among others, by finance ministers and central bank governors to showcase success stories in sub-Saharan Africa and to share experiences.

``I welcomed Tanzania`s strong macroeconomic performance and structural reforms,`` he said.

Sound and economic policies have contributed to robust growth and moderate inflation placing Tanzania among the leading successful reformers in Africa, he said.

``Strong fiscal performance, underpinned by buoyant revenues and further improvements in tax administration, will anchor macroeconomic stability,`` he added.

The delegation has also met with Bank of Tanzania Governor Beno Ndulu, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda, Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume and representatives from the private sector.
